New and Notable Books

The Legend of Rock Paper Scissors by Drew Daywalt, hardback $17.99.
The author of The Day the Crayons Quit does it again.  Did you ever wonder how the game of Rock Paper Scissors started?  It could be that a mighty warrior named Rock, a clever warrior named Paper, and one sharp gal named Scissors engaged in a legendary battle in the great cavern of Two-Car Garage.  I won't swear to this but it could have happened that way. Illustrated by Adam Rex.

The Photo Ark: One Man's Quest to Document the World's Animals by Joel Sartore, hardback $35.
National Geographic photographer Sartore has made it a quest to photograph all of the species on the endangered list.  Shot in zoos around the world, these are stunning photos.  Joel was a customer of mine in Nebraska and is passionately dedicated to his craft.  He will go anywhere and do anything to get a photo.   These are portraits of animals you might never see again.  Forward by Harrison Ford.

Hallelujah Anyway: Rediscovering Mercy by Anne Lamott, hardback $20.
As we struggle to navigate an increasingly complex world and understand our place in it, mercy points the way forward.  Mercy is the medicine, the light that shines in dark places.  With the sensitivity, wisdom, and humor that have won her millions of readers, Anne Lamott explains the important of mercy in our lives, the extraordinary power it can have if we welcome it, and the unexpected value of sharing it with others and with ourselves.

The Key to Extraordinary by Natalie Lloyd, paperback $6.99.
Everyone in Emma's family is special.  Her ancestors include Revolutionary War spies, brilliant scientists, and famous country music singers--every single one of which learned of their Extraordinary Destiny through a dream.  But when Emma's own dream finally arrives, it points her toward an impossible task--finding a legendary treasure that's supposedly hidden near her town's historic cemetery.  If Emma fails, she'll let down generations of her extraordinary ancestors, including her own mother.  But how can she find something that's been missing for centuries and might be protected by a mysterious singing ghost?  For grades 3-5.
